Treatment options for gynecologic conditions

St. Joseph Health offers a full range of gynecological treatment in inpatient and outpatient settings. Minimally invasive procedures are used whenever possible so our patients can, in many cases, leave the hospital sooner and return to normal activities almost immediately.

We believe that you are the most important member of your care team. We collaboratively work with you, our physicians, and staff to plan your medical and interventional treatment.

Common gynecologic procedures we offer to treat various conditions include:

  • Hysterectomy: This surgical procedure involves the removal of the uterus. It's performed for various reasons such as treating uterine fibroids, endometriosis, chronic pelvic pain, or certain types of cancer. Depending on the condition, it can be partial (removing part of the uterus) or total (removing the entire uterus).

  • Ovarian Cyst Removal (Ovarian Cystectomy): This surgery aims to remove cysts that form on the ovaries. It's often conducted when cysts are large, causing pain, or potentially cancerous. The surgeon removes the cyst while preserving the ovary whenever possible.

  • Hysteroscopic Polypectomy: A hysteroscope, a thin instrument with a camera, is inserted through the cervix into the uterus. This procedure removes uterine polyps—noncancerous growths on the inner wall of the uterus. It's typically an outpatient procedure.

  • Endometrial Ablation: It's a minimally invasive procedure to treat excessive menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia). The procedure aims to remove or destroy the endometrial lining of the uterus. It's often considered for women who no longer wish to have children.

These treatments vary in invasiveness and purpose, offering solutions for different gynecological conditions and concerns. Always consult a healthcare professional to discuss specific treatment options and their suitability for individual cases.

What can you do to prevent gynecological conditions?

Preventive care for gynecologic health involves various measures aimed at maintaining overall well-being and early detection of potential issues. Here are key aspects:

  • Regular check-upsScheduling routine visits to a gynecologist ensures comprehensive examinations, including pelvic exams and Pap smears. These screenings help detect abnormalities or early signs of conditions like cervical cancer.

  • Vaccinations: Vaccines like the HPV (Human Papillomavirus) vaccine can prevent certain strains of HPV that can lead to cervical cancer. Discussing vaccination options with a health care provider is crucial.

  • Healthy lifestyle: Maintaining a balanced diet, regular exercise, and managing weight can positively impact gynecological health. Adequate hydration, nutritious foods, and regular physical activity contribute to overall well-being.

  • Safe sex practices: Practicing safe sex by using condoms and discussing contraception methods with an OB/GYN reduces the risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unwanted pregnancies.

  • Breast self-exams and mammogramsRegular breast self-exams and mammograms, as recommended by health care providers, aid in early detection of breast cancer.

  • Understanding family history: Being aware of family history regarding gynecological conditions such as ovarian or breast cancer can prompt proactive discussions and screening recommendations.

  • Menstrual health awareness: Being attentive to menstrual patterns and discussing any irregularities or concerns with an OB/GYN ensures timely evaluation and management.

Prioritizing preventive care and maintaining open communication with a healthcare provider fosters proactive health management, potentially reducing the risk of gynecological issues and enabling early intervention if needed.
